27 Jan Jes Meiris Rock Climber | Portland, OR Sports Photographer
Jes Meiris is total badass. Not only did she break the women’s record for speed in climbing “The Nose” at El Capitan in 2012, she is also super nice and humble, and incredibly strong.
There is something I love about photographing athletes- they are so in tune with their bodies and Jes was no exception. She held contorted, difficult poses with total ease, and was excited with each new round of poses I threw her way.
Photographing this shoot was a great escape. Climbing over rocks and shuffling along steep edges while balancing my camera was a little nerve wracking at times, but there is a certain excitement in knowing that you can fall at any moment. I can’t begin to grasp how one would feel climbing 2,900 feet, which is the height Jes climbed to when she broke the women’s record. I repeat, this chick is a total badass.
